Why Coaching?
The term “coaching” is a big buzzword these days. Executive coaching, business development coaching, leadership coaching, life coaching; the list goes on and on!
Coaching developed formally as a separate helping profession over the past 35 years or so, though its roots are at least a couple of decades older than that.
Why coaching? We have leaders, teachers, trainers, consultants, and mentors already. Those professions cover a whole lot of territory. What does a coach bring to the table that is not already represented?
It’s a good question! Especially when coaching skills can be incorporated wonderfully well into any of the above-mentioned professions, enhancing their quality of delivery and their results.
But a coaching partnership does bring something special to the table beyond a skill set.
Have you ever had a sports coach or a schoolteacher or a business mentor who just had a knack for finding and pulling out the very best in you? I’m talking about the kind of best that you did not even know was inside you.
Have you ever had a friend or family member who was all in for you, believing in you and encouraging you to take a risk and go for something that was in your heart to do but you were afraid of doing? Like a career change or other BHAG (Big, Hairy Audacious Goal)?
Have you ever been given the best of advice, the best business strategy or plan, the best training course, but somehow you couldn’t close the gap between knowledge and action and successfully implement what was offered?
Have you ever set out on a course that you knew was the right one, but then large obstacles loomed, motivation waned, and you could not keep yourself accountable to get to the finish line?
These are a few examples of situations where a coaching partnership can help you go the distance to reach your desired goals.
Coaching is a growth and development partnership between coach and client. It harnesses the power of relationship and conversational change to help you perform at your best, reach your goals, and stay in touch with what matters most to you in your career and life.
The goal of a coach is not to teach you or to give you industry advice. Coaches exist to help you discover YOUR advice, to find your motivation, to help you work and live by your core values and utilize your authentic leadership style. All this while learning to be the person that your dog already thinks you are. 😊 Just kidding. Unless that is a goal on your agenda. Then not kidding.
